Field Trip "A" - Oklahoma City
|
National
Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum – Located atop
Persimmon Hill in east Oklahoma City, the “Cowboy Hall” (as it
is locally known) features one of the most distinguished
collections of western art in the world, including significant
works by master artists such as Charles Russell, Frederic
Remington and Albert Bierstadt. Also included are numerous
historical exhibits that tell America’s story as it unfolds
across the West, from Prosperity Junction, a 14,000-square-foot
Western cattle town, and the children's Cowboy Corral, to the
gallery of Fine American Firearms and the Hall of Great Western
Performers. |
Field Trip "B" - Oklahoma City
Oklahoma
City National Memorial & Museum – Created to honor the
168 who were killed, those who survived and those changed
forever by the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal
Building in Oklahoma City, the memorial educates visitors about
the events surrounding the bombing and the impact of violence.
It also inspires hope and healing through lessons learned by
those affected. Still standing are the Survivor Tree and the
Support Fence, a protective barrier for the site that became a
symbol of support and hope as people from around the world left
and still leave notes, stuffed animals, wreaths and other
mementos. |
Field Trip "C" - Norman
National
Weather Center – If a severe thunderstorm or tornado
warning has ever been issued for your area, chances are it came
from the National Weather Center in Norman. Home to the NOAA
Storm Prediction Center, the National Weather Service Forecast
Office, the National Severe Storms Laboratory and the School of
Meteorology, the NWC is a unique confederation of federal,
state, and University of Oklahoma organizations that work
together to improve understanding of events occurring in Earth's
atmosphere. From the national network of weather surveillance
Doppler radars to storm chasing, if it has to do with weather,
it happens at the NWC. |
|
Sam
Noble Museum of Natural History – Over 300 million
years of Oklahoma’s natural history can be seen in this
195,000-square-foot facility, featuring thousands of artifacts
in five different galleries – the halls of Ancient Life, Natural
Wonders, World Cultures, People of Oklahoma, and the Discovery
Room. Visitors to the museum can explore artifacts and
scientific specimens in a hands-on, interactive environment
while participating in activities that focus on understanding
natural history, archaeology, fossils, geology and Oklahoma's
natural resources. |
|
Field Trip "D" - South Oklahoma City
Working
Oil & Gas Production Site – At the time of its discovery
nearly 80 years ago, the Oklahoma City field was one of the most
prolific oil producing areas in the world. Today the fields
around Oklahoma City continue to supply oil and natural gas. On
this guided tour of an enhanced recovery site that uses an
innovative dewatering process, you will see one of the modern
ways in which oil and gas are extracted from the ground and
separated, as well as modern methods of environmental
protection. Learn what it takes to supply those utilities that
sell natural gas or use it to generate electricity. |
Field Trip "E" - Weatherford
Weatherford
Wind Energy Center – Located approximately an hour’s drive
west of Oklahoma City, this AEP/PSO wind farm features 98
turbines spread over 5,000 surrounding acres. Turbines stand 262
feet tall and feature three rotating blades each measuring 122
feet in length. Ranked Number 8 nationally for its wind
resources, the site became operational in 2005 and is capable of
generating 147 megawatts, enough to power nearly 44,000 homes.
Our tour will be guided by AEP personnel. |
